My little corner of the hospitality industry in Ocean City, Maryland, was crowded and busy for Memorial Day weekend 2012. Two words say it all: “No Vacancy.”
The photos in this post (except the one from Wikimedia Commons, below right) were taken late Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend on the beach at Ocean City. IMO, late afternoon is the most pleasant time of day on the beach. (Unless you get up early enough to see the sunrise.) It’s less crowded than at high noon, and the sun’s rays are less lethal. Of course, I don’t spend any time at all on the beach during the summer. As the late, great OC newsman Dick Lohmeyer often said, you can easily tell the people who make their living in Ocean City. They’re the ones without a tan in August.
As always, the weather can make it or break it at the beach. We were blessed with perfect beach weather from start to finish for Memorial Day weekend. With the exception of a close encounter with Hurricane Irene on the last weekend of August in 2011, beach weather has been almost always good for the past two seasons, and the trend continues this year (knock on wood).
We started 2012 with what might have been the best New Year’s weekend ever. It helped that the weather was balmy. New Year’s Eve fell on Saturday night, and New Year’s Day and the Penguin Swim on a Sunday, making it a three-day weekend for most people. Perfect timing! The balmy trend has continued throughout the spring.
Just now, Ocean City is coming off two highly successful May weekends — Cruising OC car weekend, and Memorial Day Weekend — heading into a promising June.
In addition to weather, reasonable gasoline prices are an important variable in weekend and vacation travel. Prices have dropped through the spring. As of this writing, a gallon of regular gas is selling at $3.49 in West Ocean City. I understand the national average is $3.64 a gallon.
For those of you who are wondering: Yes, businesses in Ocean City are still hiring. Especially check out the two new restaurants opening soon in West Ocean City. Also, check out the classifieds in the two weekly papers, which you’ll find in the sidebar at right.
